Japanese, late 1940s, figures represent [Matsuri] or festival masks including [Okame] lower left and [Hyottoko] lower right, two of the most important festival figures and are often partners in lively sexual antics at [Matsuri]; central figure probably [Benkei], the warrior monk retainer to Yoshitsune, Japan’s greatest tragic hero; upper right figure [Sanbaso] dancer, appeases the gods by his dance at the beginning of the New Year; upper left figure unidentified, 7 x 5 in., all framed together in cherry wood frame. Condition: all good condition, floating on acid-free mat.
