Sullivan County, 1840-1870, case attributed John Wolfe, Piney Flats, figured cherry with inlaid escutcheons, three dove-tailed drawers with poplar secondary, paneled back and sides, each door set with two urn and flower punch-work decorated tins, 50 x 58 x 19 in.

Note: Literature: Namuni Hale Young, "Art and Furniture of East Tennessee" cat. 69; Young indicates there are two other known identical safes attributed to John Wolfe. A copy of the book accompanies the lot.

Condition

excellent condition overall; typical stains, wear, and minor cracks; one door with scar from catch; scattered minor surface distress and some dents to punched tins (some later paint at reverse); diamond escutcheons on drawers are later (formerly fitted with locks); surface has some traces of green paint
