Note: Faded and partially illegible note to underside mentions Christie's & Manson as well as Samuel Rogers, dated 1853 or 1858, a 1856 Christie's auction catalog of his estate mentions lot 823 described as, "An elegant Mahogany Circular Stand, on three bronze lions’ legs, surmounted by sphynxes, and triangular plinth 18 in. diameter. Designed from Hope’s Book of Furniture"; similar example on page 86 of Thomas Hope's 1807 book "Household Furniture and Interior Decoration". Samuel Rogers was a celebrated English poet also recognized for his fine collection of furniture, antiquities, decorative arts, books, and fine art.
