Boston area, 1710-1730, walnut throughout, rectangular top with canted corners, set on a splayed stretcher form base with deeply scalloped stretchers and fine ring and baluster turned legs and stretchers, on original turned feet, 25 x 31-1/2 x 19 in. - Provenance: Skinner, January 15, 1995, Lot 29; Property from the Collection of Dudley and Constance Godfrey
Condition
excellent condition considering age, appears to be a single board top, minor top warping and top set with some later screws, some cracks at leg tops with losses around some tenons (see detailed photos), one later brace attachment for top, cracks and repairs to one stretcher at joint of legs (later pinning), original feet with minor cracks (formerly fitted with casters, now removed), dry varnished surface. Recent finish microscopy has confirmed that the shaping of the rails and the cropping of the corners of the top is original and not a later alteration. A report from Susan Buck accompanies the table. One turned stretcher possibly replaced.
