As noted in Christie's catalog:
"Many Philadelphia tall case clocks with works ordered from Thomas Wagstaffe survive. Wagstaffe was a Quaker clockmaker who worked in London from 1756-1793 and made brass clock works for Quaker cabinetmakers in both Philadelphia and Newport. In the 18th century, Quakers in London and American Colonial cities commonly traded goods in a vast network of direct commercial ties. Wagstaffe probably filled custom orders from Philadelphia clock case makers for these ornamental brass works.
Two Philadelphia Chippendale clocks (one is labelled by William Connell) with works by Thomas Wagstaffe are in the Winterthur Museum, illustrated in Joseph Downs, American Furniture Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods (New York: Bonanza Books, 1952), figs. 206 and 207."
