Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1760-80, carved shell, volutes and interwoven strapwork and heart pierced splat, acanthus carved knees, boldly carved ball and claw feet, chair rails marked "IIII" and "VI", with period and probably original yellow pine slip-seat frames, marked "II" and "VII" respectively, pale blue damask upholstery, 41 x 23-1/2 x 22 in., seat height 18 in.

excellent condition overall, mellow old surface with attractive patina; probably original slip seats, old chip at back of one ear, chair "VI" with triangular braces behind front corners probably early additions, and traces of later retouch to back of splat; minor repairs at one attachment to seat rail, both with later upholstery
