Provenance: Christopher Jones Antiques, Alexandria, Virginia (accompanied by write up detailing provenance and invoice); Private Collection, Richmond, Virginia

Note:

The write up from Christopher Jones Antiques states: "Major William T. Sutherlin (1822-1893) was a wealthy tobacco farmer and merchant living in ante bellum Danville. In the mid 1850s he built a stunning Italianate villa based on designs by Richmond architect Frank B. Clopton. Sutherlin served the Confederacy as Quarter master of Danville but was prevented from more active service by ill health. Jefferson Davis held the last meeting of his cabinet in Sutherlin House during the retreat from Richmond during the final days of the war and the house became known as the "Last Capitol of the Confederacy." At the beginning of the twentieth century the house was saved from demolition by a community preservation effort and it became the city library. The house is now the home of the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History."
