Chairs Charleston, South Carolina, or British for the Charleston market, 1760-1775, each with pierced splat, upholstered slip seat and square legs with stretchers, each stamped on back rail "HN", seat braces and blocking are beech by sight, 37-1/2 in.. Condition: slip seats replaced, one with old crack at crest rail, cracks at knees, one with replaced front braces, break and repair at one rear leg with plugged screws and later pinning and small patch at joint of side rails at rear stile. Notes: Other chairs with nearly identical splat designs also stamped "HN" on the back rail are known with early Charleston, South Carolina histories. The group is illustrated and discussed in Rauschenberg and Bivins, Jr., [The Furniture of Charleston 1680--1820], Vol. 1, pp. 372-374.
