Virginia or possible Pennsylvania, circa 1800, deeply serpentine form with figured walnut with yellow pine secondary throughout, line inlays, four graduated serpentine drawers on shaped skirt and distinctive feet, 36 x 38 x 22 in.

Provenance: Collection of JoAnn and Whit Whitley, North Carolina

Note: A related serpentine chest is in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg, see Hurst and Prawn, Southern Furniture, 1680-1830: The Colonial Williamsburg Collection, catalog number 114. This chest offered here is of related form, but with differences in construction and the secondary wood is entirely yellow pine, suggesting a valley origin.
