attributed to Valley of Virginia, circa 1800, deeply serpentine form with figured walnut with yellow pine secondary throughout, line inlays, four graduated serpentine drawers on shaped skirt and distinctive feet, 36 x 38 x 22 in.

Provenance: Collection of JoAnn and Whit Whitley, North Carolina

Note: A related serpentine chest is in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg, see Hurst and Prawn, Southern Furniture, 1680-1830: The Colonial Williamsburg Collection, catalog number 114. This chest offered here is of related form, but with differences in construction and the secondary wood is entirely yellow pine, suggesting a valley origin.
