Tall Case Clock late 18th century, dial signed Tho. Worswick of Lancaster, case attributed to Gillows, arched and painted dial with rocking naval scene, date and seconds hands, eight day brass movement, fine case with pierced broken arched pediment with carved rosettes, cluster columns, gothic arched door and ogee bracket feet, pendulum and two weights, 90 x 23 x 10-1/2 in.. Notes: Susan Stuart notes in Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840 that "Thomas Worswick deserves a special place in decorative arts history, since he was the first known clockmaker in the world to use white or painted dials on his clocks." With its pierced fretwork, string inlay and gothic details, the clock offered here is very closely related to that very first example, made in 1773 and with a case supplied by Gillows. Worswick was the brother-in-law of Robert and Richard Gillow, having married Alice, daughter of Robert I and Agnes Gillow in 1756. For more on Worswick and Gillow, see Stuart, pp. 398-400.. Provenance: Private Collection, Athens, Georgia
