Stepback Cupboard Piedmont, probably lower Catawba River Valley, North Carolina, early 19th century, yellow pine throughout with fine original painted surface, elaborate molded and dentil cornice over three open shelves, double-paneled lower doors with shelved interior, original patinated surface with traces of original mahogany grain paint and Prussian blue trim, 87 x 56-1/2 x 21 in. excellent condition overall, dry patinated original surface with expected wear and paint losses, undisturbed backboards with cut nails, chips and losses at lower case sides (slight loss of height at rear feet causing the cupboard to lean back slightly), formerly fitted with plate lips and two rails at middle shelves. Notes: This fine cupboard relates to a corner cupboard with similar paint scheme made by Nathan Overton of Randolph County in the 1820s (now in the Colonial Williamsburg Collection). In addition, a painted blanket chest at MESDA has a early identical pendant drop on the skirt, and a corner cupboard with related fret has also been documented.. Provenance: Cleve Harris Collection, sold late 1980s; Private Collection
