Penrith, Cumberland, England, stitched top "Mary Shields -daughter of Robert & Fanny Shields Penreth [sic] Cumberland" over four line verse, lower panel depicts Adam and Eve appearing to wear grass skirts, flanked by stick-legged deer and mutliple birds perched in trees of various sizes and shapes, sun and moon overhead, signed bottom, "Mary Shields Aged 11 1811. taught by B Walker", multiple floral bands, strawberry vine border with tulip cornerwork, 18 x 12 in. (sight); burl veneer frame fading, areas of wear, fading, minor veneer losses to frame, not examined out of frame. Notes: 1851 Census records list Mary Shields at age 50 living with Robert and Fanny Shield in Penrith, England. Provenance: Estate of Robert H. Hirsch, Sarasota, Florida
