Massachusetts, 1800-1810, dial signed "Aaron Willard/Boston", arched painted dial depicting a riverscape scene, American Federal shield form spandrels, waisted case with quarter columns, original tall French feet, original figural eagle brass finials,  102-1/2 in.

Note:
This clock has descended through the Reid and Settle families of Reidsville, North Carolina, since the 19th century. It has been a furnishing of Hugh Reid Scott's home "Melrose," in Reidsville, North Carolina, since the home was built in 1910.
 
The Reid and Settle families have a long and varied history of public service in North Carolina. David Settle Reid was a NC Governor (1851-1854), US Senator, Congressman and a member of the Great Peace Conference (1861). Thomas Settle was a NC Superior Court Judge, Speaker of the House (1827), member of the NC House of Commons and member of the US House of Representatives. Thomas Settle II was a Speaker of the NC House, Captain of the Third NC Regiment of the Army, NC State Senator, founder of the NC Republican Party (1867), and associate justice of the NC Supreme Court.

Condition

extensive losses and repairs to fretwork (extant pieces put in place with museum wax for photo), otherwise good condition, dial with craquelure, surface dirt, minor paint losses, breaks to bottom board (from weights falling) with associated breaks and distress to skirts, pendulum with replaced rod, two period weights, winding key, pendulum present

In house shipping.  Brunk Auctions provides in-house shipping via UPS Ground (signature required) for many items. Brunk Auctions will provide a shipping quote which includes shipping, materials, labor and insurance.  Insurance is based on the selling price and premium.

  • Shipping method: if you have a UPS or Fed Ex account # we can bill your account 3rd Party and you can arrange payment for materials, labor and insurance.  If you have your own insurance please send a signed waiver of liability.

Shipping arrangements are made only after the invoice is paid.  The payment for shipping is a separate charge from payment of your lots.

Sales Tax: If you live in North Carolina and/or pick up from the auction house, and do not have a valid resale tax number on file with us, you MUST pay North Carolina state sales tax. The NC Sales Tax will not apply to any items being shipped out of state (unless the client resides in North  Carolina) or to those clients with a resale tax number.
