Columbia S.C." applied kaolin script across front body of jug, applied kaolin underline accents under the "S.C." on lower body of jug, thick arched strap handle at shoulder, spout with tightly tooled neck and rim, 15 in. tall, 36 in. circumference

Note: There are a few of these Collin Rhodes attributed South Carolina merchant jars have come to market in recent years, they are decorated with the kaolin slip inscription "J.A. Hendrix & Co. Lexington CH, S.C.", a jug with the same kaolin inscription resides in the collection of the Charleston Museum, other examples of these works have traded hands privately with different merchant inscriptions, the jug we are offering here is the only piece known at the time of cataloging to have the "M.L. Brown & Co., Columbia, S.C." inscription.
