Note: The Sun Fire Office, later Sun Insurance, was founded in London in 1710, and developed into a leading national insurance business. The business expanded greatly over the 18th and 19th century, ultimately entering the American marketplace in the late 19th century. Early images of the Sun Fire Office depict this distinctive form with alternating straight and curved sun rays.
