Salem, Massachusetts, circa 1795, carving attributed to Samuel McIntire (1757-1811), shield back centering three finely carved rosette and bellflower chain slats, above a carved leafy lunette, carving with punchwork ground, serpentine front seat rail with striped silk upholstery, tapered legs carved with rosettes issuing bellflower chain carved in relief, 38-1/2 x 21-1/2 x 20 in., seat height 17 in.

Note: This fine chair is nearly identical to a set of four chairs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and may be from the same set. Condition

good overall with fine carving, break and repair with one patch at joint of crest rail to rear stile, break and repair at one vertical slat, some later reinforcing pins at seat rail joints, minor glue repair at top of left front leg, glue blocks replaced (minor restorations by Allen Anderson, January 2003 as noted in the Keno invoice)
