(Maryland/Pennsylvania, 1927-2016)

Red Grouse or "Scotch Grouse", male, 1983, signed underside base "E. F. Muehlmatt 9/83", finely carved, burnt and painted wood, leaves, naturalistic base, wood plinth, 14-1/2 x 15 in. [Naturalist]

Note: Ernie Muehlmatt won the Ward World Championship Carving Competition three times during the 1970s. His carvings rarely come to auction. Peter Tillou likely recognized Muehlmatt as a master carver and invested in this piece along with others. This grouse is endemic to the British Isles and Scottish Highlands. It is the mascot for the Famous Grouse Scotch Whiskey. A Certificate of Excellence from The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia Wildlife Art Exposition was awarded to Muehlmatt for "Scotch Grouse".
