(American, 1879-1973)

Mother and Child, The Rhoades Family, circa 1902, signed on original tissue mount, gum bichromate print on heavy paper, 10 x 7-3/4 in.; natural wood frame, 24 x 16 in.

Provenance: The Estate of Barbara Rhoades; Private Collection, North Carolina

Note: The Steichen photo is from the estate of Barbara Rhoades, grandniece of Katharine Rhoades by way of her father. The child in the photo is the father of Barbara Rhoades, shown with his mother, who would also be Katharine's mother. Katherine would become a modernist painter who exhibited at the Armory Show of 1913.   Steichen was a frequent house guest of the Rhoades. Katherine had a close relationship with both Steichen and Steiglitz before giving up on her own artwork and becoming an assistant to Charles Lang Freer, founder of the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, now a part of the Smithsonian Institution.
