The Fireproof Building, signed lower right "de May-Smith", watercolor, 21-3/4 x  x 30-1/4 in. (sight); gilt and distressed wood frame, 30-1/2 x 38-3/4 in.

Notes: Robert Mills (1781–1855), thought to be the first native-born trained architect in America,  was given the task to create a fireproof building in Charleston to house county records and the offices of officials. He is best known for designing the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.
