(Edgefield, South Carolina b. circa 1800 d. after 1873) attributed to Dave Drake, made at Lewis Miles Stoneware Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, 1849, olive green and brown alkaline glaze with with lighter colored runs to sides of jar, bulbous form, inscribed at front shoulder "Sept 14 : 1849", four punctates and two slash marks incised into back shoulder, two applied lug handles, ridged neck, flared rim, lid shelf in mouth of jar, 14-3/4 in. - Note: The jar was produced at the beginning of Dave's second tenure with Lewis Miles from 1849-1865, this period embodies the vast majority of his signed, dated, and scripted verse works. - Provenance: Collection of Dr. Joseph T. and Gaile E.
