(New Mexico/New York/Michigan/France, 1866-1936)
Chunga Firelight, signed lower right "E. I. Couse", oil on canvas, 12 x 16 in.; Couse style hand-carved, polychromed wood frame (see note), 23-1/4 x 19-1/2 in.
Note:Frame dealers Newhouse & Sons, St. Louis, Missouri, designed a frame for Couse that they painted and used on all his paintings. The arrowheads, pots, and overall design are obvious references to Native American life, and the final polychroming was done by Newhouse craftsmen to harmonize specifically with the painting it would eventually frame. A letter from the artist's grandaughter Virginia Couse Leavitt accompanies this lot.
