Dutch, 16th-18th century, probably later fabrication, comprised of multiple tapestry fragments of polychrome wool, seamed together, central panel, probably late 17th or early 18th century, depicts an armored Roman soldier in red-orange tones holding a shield and spear and standing on an architectural element; a large bouquet of flowers in a handled vase sits at ground level and a landscape is visible in the background, narrow yellow around central panel, wider outer border made up of fragments of at least three other tapestries, 104 x 44 in.

Provenance: Prior provenance not yet documented; probably acquired in New York, New York, in the 1920s by Warren J. Smadbeck of New York; 1965, inherited from Warren J. Smadbeck by Violeta Rodriguez Smadbeck (Mrs. Warren J. Smadbeck) of New York; 1998, gift of Violeta Rodriguez Smadbeck to the Brooklyn Museum; Property from the Brooklyn Museum

Purchased items will be available for pick up or shipping from our Asheville, North Carolina auction facility within ten business days of the auction, or will be assessed a storage fee of $5.00 per day, per item. Purchaser agrees that packing and shipping is done at the purchaser's risk and that the purchaser will pay in advance all packing expenses, materials, carrier fees and insurance charges. At our discretion, items will either be packed by an agent such as a packaging store or Brunk Auctions. Please allow two weeks for shipping after payment is received. Shipment of large items is the responsibility of the purchaser. We are happy to provide names of carriers and shippers if a purchaser so requests. Brunk Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to shipped items.
