"Wheatfields of Tennessee", signed lower right "Cornelius Hankins", oil on canvas, 18 x 14 in.; gilt and composition wood frame, painting in good condition, traces of label verso; frame with cracked composition. Notes: Cornelius Hankins painted throughout the South. He was best known for his portraiture and was commissioned by various state governments, including Tennessee and Virginia, to paint confederate generals such as Robert E. Lee. Aside from portraiture he painted impressionist landscapes and still lifes influenced by William Merritt Chase and his studies in Europe. His work has been exhibited at Richmond Art Club, the Fine Arts Center at Cheekwood and the Nashville Artist Guild Gallery. Many southern states still hold his paintings in their collections
