late 18th/early 19th century, arched painted and gilt dial with seconds sweep and date aperture, brass movement, waisted and paneled case with fluted colonettes and brass finials, paneled base with scalloped molding, original ogee bracket feet with deeply scrolled returns, pendulum and two weights, 89 x 20-1/2 x 11 in.

Note: According to family tradition, this piece descended in and never left the Whittlesey family of Middletown, Connecticut, until it was sold at Sotheby's in 2003.

dial paint with even crackle, some varnish discoloration, some minor losses and retouch, vertical blinds at back of hood restored, capitals and bases of colonettes resurfaced or restored, original feet with some later blocking, typical bumps and wear, works with later chiming mechanism, later interior case paint
