Attributed to Fujina Village Japanese, late 1940s, spectacular slip-trail plate with decorated deer in yellow-on-brown, 10 in.; celadon-glazed tea bowl, 3-1/2 x 4-3/4 in.; four small slip-trail decorated plates/shallow bowls, 4-3/4 to 6-1/4 in.; two small pitchers, 6 in. and 4-1/2 in.; small covered jar, 4-1/2 in.; small-handled yellow pitcher with slip decoration, 2-3/4 in.; six small slip-decorated handled bowls, 1-1/2 x 4 in.; one deep-footed bowl with brown half-circle decoration, 8-1/4 x 3-3/4 in.; some attributions are speculative based on clay body and glaze. Condition: 6 in. pitcher with chips on base, other pieces in good condition. Notes: The large plate with yellow slip-decorated deer on brown background may be by Funaki family potters in Fujina. Bernard Leach visited Fujina between the wars and taught English slip-trail design to the local potters. Funaki Kenji became a student of Hamada Shoji’s in 1950 and it is interesting to speculate that this is how these pieces came to the Bennett collection. The lot includes an [Arts of Asia] for September-October 1986 with an article on Funaki Kenji and the Fujina kilns.
