Claudius Ptolemy (fl. AD 127-145), engraver Johannes Schnitzer of Armszheim, Untitled map of the world surrounded by twelve headwinds, publisher Johann Reger (fl. 1480-1499) Ulm, 1486, engraving on laid paper with hand coloring, sheet 16-3/4 x 22-3/4 in.; framed, 27-3/4 x 34 in.

Note: Based on the works of Roman astronomer, mathematician, and geographer Claudius Ptolemy, this early world map engraved by Johannes Schnitzer of Armszheim was originally published in 1482 by Leinhart Holle. The map was reissued in 1486 by Johan Reger, who took over the publishing following Holle's bankruptcy, and is distinguished from the earlier edition by the coloring of the seas, which has now faded to brown. Few examples of either edition are said to remain today, making this map an exceptional rarity.

Literature: Rodney W. Shirley, The Mapping of the World, London: Holland Press, 1983, no. 10
