Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword, by Roby, West Chelmsford, Massachusetts, inscribed "Lieut. John A. Richardson" with etched emblems of cannons, eagle with shield, "U.S.", "Union", overall 37 in.; with scabbardÿ - Note: After checking the records of roughly a dozen "John A. Richardsons", along with another 80 where no middle initial was given, research seems to point to a 22 year old clerk from Lowell, Massachusetts. This John A. Richardson enlisted on August 31, 1862, as a Corporal. He was mustered into Company "C" of the Massachusetts 6th Infantry on that same day. A promotion to 2nd Lieutenant came on July 16, 1864.ÿSource: Historical Data Systems (civilwardata.com)ÿ
