Portrait of a Man with a Pipe and Match, said to be John Duncan (Scotland, 1708-1768) in 1751, inscribed verso lining "James Duncan 1751 born in the year 1708", oil on canvas, 14-3/8 x 11-3/4 in.; wood frame with velvet liner, 21-5/8 x 19 in.
Note: Interestingly, the Duncan Family, including Hugh Duncan and others, immigrated to America in 1790 and settled in the Pendleton District, South Carolina in what is now Anderson County. This painting was sold out of a South Carolina auction house in April 2021. Old, stenciled numbers "1181" and "624" are stamped verso the stretcher suggesting an early 20th century auction item.
