Each bamboo leaf is a stroke from characters in the poem, and translates as "He would rather serve in the Shu Kingdom (Shu-Han Empire, 221 - 263) than in the Cao Kingdom (Cao-Wei Empire, 220 - 265). The painting which is a model for the stele from which this rubbing was made was by Han Zai (Qing Dynasty).
