(19th century) The Canadian Barque [Nicosia], 1894, family tradition states that this portrait was painted in Hong kong and depicts the commander's family at stern. The ship later ran aground off Sable Island, signed, inscribed at bottom center "Nicosia of St. John N.B. W.H. Cole comdr. 1894", oil on canvas, 24 x 36 in.; original gilt wood and composition frame, patch verso with related retouch at middle sail, some retouch in sky and at edges, crackle, canvas loose, some water damage at left edge, other areas of retouch; frame with losses, and resurfacing.
