Note: This platter belonged to a service ordered by Revolutionary War veteran, New York senator, and presidential candidate DeWitt Clinton, who successfully pushed for the construction of the Erie Canal, transforming the state's infrastructure and leading to his state becoming a center of American trade. Three similar platters are in the collection of the U.S. State Department Diplomatic Reception Rooms and one plate from the service is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
