early 19th century, brown Fitzhugh decoration centering the initial "H", 3-1/2 x 2-3/4 x 3-5/8 in.
Provenance: The Collection of John Suval, Fredericksburg, Virginia
Note: This pot de crème is believed to be from either the Hone or Henley family service, as both families used the initial "H". A piece from the Hone family service is illustrated in New York and the China Trade by David Sanctuary Howard, p. 116, no. C75. A group from that service sold at Sotheby’s New York, Building America: The Wolf Family Collection, April 21, 2023, lot 914.
It has also been suggested that this pot de crème is part of the service commissioned by Captain John Dandridge Henley (1781–1835), the nephew of Martha Washington. Related pieces were sold at Hindman, Palm Beach, Florida, Sale 814, December 1, 2020, lot 164, for $9,375; see: https://hindmanauctions.com/auctions/814-december-palm-beach-collections/lot/164.
