(New York/Massachusetts, 1859-1935) Walking on the Pier, Gloucester Harbor, 1895, signed lower center “Childe Hassam”, oil on canvas, 22-1/4 x 18-3/8 in.; carved and gilt wood frame lined with wax and linen, retaining tacking edges, no apparent retouch; frame with minor abrasions. Notes: Kathleen Burnside states that “the vantage point assumed by Hassam seems to be on the dock on Rocky Neck, looking back at East Gloucester over Smith Cove.” Burnside’s research with a marine history specialist at the Cape Ann Historical Society revealed that the scene depicted was likely of the Rocky Neck Marine Railways, now known as the Gloucester Marine Railways Corporation, and still in existence repairing vessels. She also comments that Hassam worked “quite extensively over three decades, completing something in the vicinity of 100 works, not including prints with Gloucester subjects. He was particularly active there in 1890, 1894-6, 1899, and also worked extensively there in 1918-19." She continues by saying, "your work, which we have currently titled Walking on the Pier, seems to stylistically fit with other 1894-5 paintings.” This painting will be included as #1895.003 in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works. Brunk Auctions would like to thank Kathleen M. Burnside and Hirschl & Adler Galleries for their assistance with this painting.. Provenance: Ex-collection J. Watkins; Hirchl and Adler, New York, #1233, 1970-1972; Coe Kerr Gallery, New York (photo certification verso); Private North Carolina Collection
