British, late 18th century, back clip with gold plate with bright cut decoration of lion rampant, leafy floral decoration, six gold link chains supporting: yellow gold monogrammed cartouche with pocket watch signed "Tho Wagstaff, London, 9406", porcelain dial with black numerals, in yellow gold case stamped "[crowned lion head], [lion passant]", date letter "g", maker's mark "IP", 1-5/8 in., tests 18kt. gold; an outer hinged yellow gold case decorated with lion rampant, swags and repeating geometrics and florals, stamped "[head of George III], [lion rampant], [crowned leopard's head], date letter "m", maker's mark "IP", 2 in., tests 18kt. gold; yellow gold plated winding key, 1-3/8 in.; watch fob in yellow gold with carved intaglio of robed female figure with anchor, 1 in., tests 18k gold; yellow gold winding key, 3/4 in., tests 18kt. gold; watch fob in yellow gold with carved intaglio of heraldic shield consisting of two lion passant and three lion rampant, 1-1/4 in., tests 18kt. gold

 

Note: Accompanying is the sales receipt from Fortnum and Mason describing the object and stating it was obtained from "Combe Abbey, Warwickshire, in the possession of the family of the Earls of Craven since 1665...the arms are of Craven in the first and fourth quarter date of seal approximately 1750."

Condition

scratching, watch not in working order, small chip to porcelain at middle stem location, scratching to glass, wear to surfaces consistent with age and use, wear to gold plating on back clip
