Note: African American artist Charles Ethan Porter is known to have painted a wide variety of subject matter, including portraits, nudes, and interiors, but his favorite was still life. He began his career exhibiting still lifes and returned to them his entire life, both fruit and flowers. However, for whatever reason, very few examples of Porter's work other than still life examples are known to exist today, making his work overall quite rare.
