(French, 1770-1852)Portrait of James Bankhead, drawing-watercolor, black and white chalk on paper, 22 x 16 in.; period gilt cove molding frame with reverse painted glass liner, 25-1/2 x 19-1/2 in. - Note: James Monroe Bankhead was born in Port Royal, Caroline County, Virginia on May 24, 1783. He joined the U.S. Army in 1808. He served in various command and staff assignments and was on the staff of General Wade Hampton in the War of 1812.His service brought him to Charleston, South Carolina where he met and married Ann Smith Pyne, the daughter of John Pyne. One of their sons, John Pyne Bankhead, was the commander of the ironclad USS Monitor when it was sunk in 1862 during the Civil War.James Bankhead served in the Mexican American War, the Second Seminole War and was eventually appointed commander to the Department of the East headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. He served there until his death in 1856.
