probably Maryland or Virginia, mid to late 19th century, deeply carved pine depicting a black man wearing a straw hat and surrounded by tobacco leaves tied at bottom with yellow ribbon, 15-3/4 x 25 in., probably original paint with scattered wear and losses especially to nose and lower lip, dent at brim of hat, scattered paint retouch to leaves and face, minor losses at corners.
