Notes: Caroline Petigru was daughter of James Lewis Petigru (1789-1863), a prominent Charleston lawyer and Unionist. She married William A. Carson in 1840. Her portrait was painted by Thomas Sully in 1841 when he recorded that "she was an artist of considerable merit." Her works are rare, and while known for portraiture, these still lifes are pleasant studies of flora associated with southern gardens.. Provenance: Estate of Marjorie and Charles West
