(Swiss, 1866-1937)

Adelboden, Switzerland, circa 1905, signed in stone right "C Pellegrini", A. Trugg & Cie, Aarau, printer, color lithographic travel poster, 25-3/4 x 40-1/2 in.; metal frame, conservation acrylic, 40-3/4 x 26-1/4 in.

Note:

Described in Dick Button's notes as a "monograph", this poster is rare. It depicts the town of Adelboden, an alpine village situated in the western area of Switzerland. Because of its elevated location within the Engstilgen valley, it was not until improved roads were built in the late nineteenth century that Adelboden was connected to the rest of the world and able to attract tourists to its hotels during the winter holidays. In 1903, Sir Henry Lunn, English businessman and owner of a rather successful travel agency named after him, decided to make Adelboden the destination of choice for his packaged winter sports holiday that year. Using skating as a theme, Lunn and other travel promoters helped to popularize the Alps as the place to be during the winter months.

The skater depicted is in a perfect lean to create an "edge" by which to turn.
