the Antique
Continental, late 19th/early 20th century, crowned with [kotinos], the olive wreath awarded to victors in the Olympic Games, of which only the stem is preserved. Original by Athenian bronze sculptor Silanion in about 330-320 B.C., found at Olympia, now in the National Museum of Athens. Facial features have lead to the identification of the figure as possibly Satyros of Elis, who repeatedly won the boxing event at Nemea, Pythia, and Olympia. Statue on white painted wooden stand, bust 13 in. hollow, extensive clay and dirt residue with oxidation to surface. Provenance: Collection of Laura Lewis, New Brighton, Pennsylvania
