(19th century)

The Battle Off Camperdown, signed lower right "F. A. Hu_", watercolor in grisaille on paper, 20-1/4 x 28-1/2 in.; modern frame, 26-1/4 x 34-1/2 in.

Notes: On October 11, 1797, the British fleet defeated the Dutch off the coast of Holland, near Camperdown. The ship at right likely depicts Admiral Duncan’s ship, Venerable which, during the battle,  a part of the mast was broken including the admiral's flag. This victory has been celebrated in paintings and prints. This is likely a preliminary study for an engraving.
