probably American, late 18th/early 19th century, depiction of when Ruth met Boaz in the grain field, silk, paint, ink on silk, 19 x 25 in. (sight), eglomisé mat, fine gilt wood and composition cove molding frame with acorn garland,. Condition: losses to embroidery below Boaz's right hand and bottom lower right, light fading, gilt flaking on eglomisé mat, small losses to gilt right side of frame, scuffs and abrasions to frame. Provenance: The story of Ruth and Boaz was one of many popular subjects for school girl embroidery in the 19th century that was taken from an engraving. Possible attribution for the embroidery may be the Folwell School in Philadelphia where both Samuel and his son Godfrey painted and instructed girls in the art of embroidery. Several of the frames attributed to the Folwell School illustrated in Betty Ring's [Girlhood Embroidery] are almost identical to the frame with this embroidery; Private Toledo Collection
