(New York/Massachusetts, 20th century) Two etchings titled Armistice Day, 1918: one by Theresa Ferber Bernstein (1890-2002), signed in pencil "Theresa F. Bernstein ‘18", 9-7/8 x 7-3/4 in. (plate); the other by William Meyerowitz (1887-1981), signed "Wm. Meyerowitz", 9-7/8 x 8 in.; matching silver gilt wood frames,. Notes: In the New York Times obituary for Theresa Bernstein, Douglas Martin states that she was both, "hailed and flailed for ‘painting like a man‘ in the 1910‘s". These provocative side by side views of the same event, Armistice Day, 1918, by Bernstein and her husband, William Meyerowitz, exudes the strong confidence of Bernstein, uneffected by critique. Meyerowitz‘s view is light and crowded, American flags waving the celebration. In comparison, Bernstein‘s repetitive work betrays a certain heaviness that intices the viewer to think of the cost of the war, illiciting a deep emotional response to the day. As in life, they are well suited together. This lot is accompanied by an extensive archive including: original receipt from Smith-Girard; hand-written and signed letter from Theresa Bernstein dated July 11,1984; artists exhibition brochures for William Meyerowitz sent with a letter signed by Theresa Bernstein; letter from Theresa Bernsteing regardings paintings possibly for The Juilliard School dated October 24, 1984, exhibition catalog Theresa Bernstein: Expressions of Cape Ann & New York, 1914-1972, obituary clipping.. Provenance: Smith-Girard, Stamford, CT, purchased 1985; Property from the Duke Family Collection
