Hartford, Connecticut, dated January 25, 1887, transcription of letter: Dear Sir, Enclosed please find 2 fares from New York to Hartford. When I told you, in the smoking car, coming out of New York, Saturday 4:30pm, that I was "out of soap," & that my mileage book was forward in the palace car, I meant to make things right before reaching Hartford, but the whist game employed me to the very last moment, & I had to jump or get carried by. By the time I found my wife & my mileage book you were already gone. I make my apologies now, & will try to be more trustworthy next time. Yours Truly, SL Clemens, with Steve Grad letter of verification, two leaves with each 8-1/4 x 5-1/4 in.

Property of a Southern Lady
good overall, horizontal folds and some mild discoloration, the letter "P" is curiously punched multiple times on each leaf (a pencil notation at the back suggests some connection to Twain's essay Punch, Brothers, Punch!)
