(New York/Britain, 1775-1806) A Pair: Picnic on the Shenandoah, Virginia and View from a Sketch Taken on the Potomac, Virginia, circa 1794-95, unsigned, oil on tin, 10-1/8 x 14 in.; matching black painted frames Notes: The consignor states from his research that, "Washington suggested to Winstanley that he paint scenes of his beloved Virginia. One of these is a Shenandoah scene with the blue mountains. The other charming scene is believed to be the Potomac, looking across at the Maryland hills, just above Mt. Vernon where Washington had planned to build Ft. Warburton." These scenes were purchased from a collateral descendant of John Blair. George Washington was a  friend of John Blair and presented him with china from the Washington service. A plate from this service was donated to the U.S. Naval Academy Museum in 1952 by Mrs. Edward Dissette from whom these paintings were purchased.
