 (British/Pennsylvania, 1730-1788)

The Mariner's Farewell, possibly early 19th century, unsigned, oil on canvas, 13-3/4 x 11 in. carved gilt wood frame, 16-3/4 x 13-1/2 in.

The symbolism in this painting suggests that the gentleman will soon depart on a sea voyage, signified by the anchor at his feet, the telescope in her hand (with which she will probably watch the departure) and a waiting ship in the harbor below. It is possibly a study for a larger, as yet undetermined, work.
