Notes: A. H. Durocher (1798-1874) was one of the most popular figures in Baltimore during the second quarter of the 19th century. He was a composer of music and considered to be the finest dance instructor. The frame visible on the left side of Durocher’s full portrait (lot # 140) is thought to be Tilyard’s portrait of his wife, Marie Louisa, as it may have hung in the City Hotel lobby.
The Maryland Historical Society holds two portraits by Tilyard of William Baker and his wife Anna. They are similarly painted with oil on panel and exhibit similarities in both the rendering of features and the background.. Provenance: Barnum/Mclaughlin Family, Baltimore, Maryland; by descent
