Note: Captain John H. McFadden, Jr.’s father, John Howard McFadden (1850-1921), was a notable Philadelphia businessman, philanthropist, and collector of important British paintings starting in 1892. He primarily dealt with the London firm of Thomas Agnew & Sons. Approximately forty-four important paintings from his collection were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1917. He donated much of his art in an act that would lead to the building of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It is possible this set was inherited from his father.
