(American, 1755-1828)Portrait of a Gentleman said to be Thomas Callender, unsigned, oil on canvas, 28-1/4 x 23-1/4 in.; carved gilt and painted wood frame, 34 x 29 in. - Note: According to the consignor, this portrait was purchased from the Milwaukee Art Museum by his father in law, Donald B. Abert. Mr. and Mrs. Abert were long time benefactors of the Museum, and have a curatorship in American art named for them.Literature: Morgan, John Hill, Lawrence Park, and Gilbert Stuart. Gilbert Stuart : an Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works.
