(Ohio, 1836-1918) Trotting Horse About to be Sold, 1867, possibly a Xenia, Ohio, setting, signed lower left "Willard. 67", oil on canvas, 30 x 42 in.; modern gilt wood frame, laid down on masonite, crackle, retouch affecting less than 5% of surface with most upper left and at a few points in sky, a detailed conservation report from Scott Webster Nolley, Chief Conservator, Fine Art Conservation of Virginia, accompanies the lot. Notes: Archibald Willard was best known for his painting titled "Spirit of '76" which gave us the imagery for "Yankee Doodle".
